Editorial
Welcome to the first issue of the International Journal of Next Generation Library and Technologies(IJNGLT). This journal has been created to further the study and critical discussion of the concept Next Generation Library and Technologies. Our aim is to add new kind of forum for discussing the concerns, aspirations and fears that have been fermenting on the Internet for close to a decade. This journal will hopefully allow for a more sustained and focused investigation of these topics. This journal intends to position itself between the grassroots initiatives and discussions taking place on the Internet, driven by Library Professionals.
I would like to extend my gratitude to those who helped establish this project, the reviewer for their outstanding work; the writers for their work.
Now the journal is up and running, and it is already off to an exiting start.
The future of the library and book: a librarian’s view by Mr.M.N.Venkatesan
Ray Bradbury said “Without Libraries what we have? We have no past and no future”. The form of the book and library changed in time to time. The Harappa and Sumerian civilizations, where recovered books and library in the form of clay tablets tells us 5000 years history. The Sangam and Sanskrit literature, where the books in the form of Manuscripts are says 2000 years history. The Great Rajarajan, Ashoka and other rulers made their contributions in Rocks, Pillars and Copper plates as books told us 1000 years history.
The two major and the milestone events in the book and the library history is, the one is paper invented in china during the second century BC, and it has spread over the world through the Silk Route and the second one is the German Blacksmith,Johannes Gutenberg’s inventions and contributions in printing press, gave the standard format of the paper made printed books. The twentieth century digital and the virtual reality world converted the book format as electronic books.
Today Smart phones, Amazon’s Kindle, Barnes & Noble’s Nook, and multi-variety and range of e-readers are available to read and refer the e-books. The digital revolution and technological advances transmitted books and library in digital and virtually mode. The manuscripts, books and other forms of collection materials of the library are goes digital, but these are can act as the storage devices of the library. The Millions of the e- books can be stored in the in single chip or pen drive.
The future library will not be huge stored buildings it may be few and contains the collection of books as digital files; the every citizen of the country can access these books with their hand what and wherever books published in the world. Anyhow, the printed form of books is convenient to reading and will not affect the human body and particularly eyes, continuous and enjoy reading can be possible in this format, it has cultural and traditional qualities. The printed and the physical format of book will never replace whatever the digital and virtual world make changes of the forms of books and library.
